Retinal Disease Treatment

Laser treatment for retinal diseases

The inner layer of the eye is called the retina, which detects light and allows us to see. When it comes to treating retinal conditions like tears, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and retinal holes, lasers have made great strides.

Argon laser treatment of argon is used to treat a variety of eye diseases including glaucoma, diabetic eye conditions and certain retinal holes and tears. It can prevent an eye condition from getting worse, or sometimes cure it.

Intravitreal lucentis injetion

Diabetic Macular Edema (a retinal condition linked to diabetes) and neovascularization due to wet ARMD and retinal vein occlusion represent advanced treatment alternatives. A tiny injection of medication into the eye is safer and more effective than retinal lasers and complex surgeries

Lucentis, known as ranibizumab injection, is a medicine originally used to treat the wet form of age-related macular degeneration. AMD primarily affects the macula, which is part of the eye responsible for producing sharp central vision.

Lucentis can treat macular edema, or swelling inside the macula brought on by diabetes or vein occlusion. Additionally, it can prevent the growth of VEGF, a protein that damages macula and promotes vascular endothelial growth by causing aberrant blood vessels to proliferate and leak. By preventing or slowing the growth of macular oedema, lucentis injections can prevent or even reverse vision loss.

Vitreo-retinal Surgery

This surgery is designed to address a range of issues related to the retina, vitreous, and macula. Ophthalmic surgeons employ specialized techniques, equipment, and solutions to tackle conditions like retinal detachment, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and uveitis. Problems with the retina and vitreous can lead to significant vision loss or even blindness.

is a type of ocular surgery performed to remove some or all of the vitreous humor (a clear gel that fills the space between the lens and the retina) from the eye.

Retinal Detachment Surgery

Methods of repairing a retinal detachment include:
  • Pneumatic Retinopexy – In this procedure, ophthalogist injects a gas bubble into the middle of the eye ball. The gas bubble then floats into the detached area and lightly pushes against the detached retina. The movement flattens the detached retina and the fluid below it is reabsorbed. Your ophthalmologist will then use a freezing probe (cryopexy) or a laser beam (photocoagulation) to seal the tear in the retina.
  • Scleral Buckling Surgery –  ophthalmologist will place a piece of silicone sponge, rubber or a semi-hard plastic onto the outer layer of your eye, which will then be sewn into place. This will help relieve pulling (traction) on the retina to prevent tears from worsening. It will also provide support to the layers of the retina.
